Cool Canvas Primer is the right primer for you if your skin runs warm, flushes easily, feels dry, or your foundation settles into fine lines. It cools on contact and leaves a soft-focus veil that blurs pores and texture. If you simply want your foundation to last longer on any skin type, Auto Pilot Pre-Foundation Skin Primer is still the everyday all-rounder.
We have just added Auto Pilot Cool Canvas Primer to the primer family, and the first question everyone asks is which one they should be using. It is a fair question. A primer is not one product. It is a toolbox of products that share the same step in your routine, and each one solves a different problem. Here is how Cool Canvas compares to the rest of the Auto Pilot range, and how to choose without standing at the shelf for twenty minutes.
What Does A Primer Actually Do?
Every primer does one or more of four jobs:
- Grip - creates a surface your base can hold onto, so it does not slide or wear off through the day.
- Smooth - softens the look of pores and fine lines so your base sits on an even surface.
- Hydrate - adds comfort so foundation does not cling to dry patches.
- Correct - shifts the colour or light of your skin, so you need less coverage on top.
Most primers do a bit of the first three, then specialise. So instead of asking which primer is best, ask what your skin is doing that you would like it to stop doing. Answer that and the choice makes itself.
Who Is Cool Canvas Primer For?
Cool Canvas is the first primer we have made where the main focus is temperature. You feel it the moment it touches your skin: an instant cooling sensation that soothes and refreshes. That cooling is not a novelty. Warm skin produces more oil, flushes more readily and breaks down the products sitting on it. Bring the temperature down and your base has a calmer, more stable surface to sit on.
The lightweight, watery texture absorbs quickly and never feels heavy. As it settles, it leaves a breathable, soft-focus veil that blurs pores and uneven texture. It fills into fine lines rather than bridging over them, which is why it is our pick for mature skin. It is silicone free, fragrance free and vegan, with Jojoba Esters, botanical waxes and liquorice-derived Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate to help soothe skin that is feeling stressed.
Choose Cool Canvas if:
- Your skin runs warm or you get hot flushes
- Your makeup goes patchy in the Australian summer
- Your skin is on the drier or more mature side
- Your foundation settles into fine lines
- You have been in the sun all day and want to wear makeup that evening
Cool Canvas Or Pre-Foundation?
Ask yourself one question: is my problem how long my makeup lasts, or what my skin is doing underneath it?
Choose Auto Pilot Pre-Foundation Skin Primer if:
Your foundation simply does not stay put. It is our number one primer and the all-rounder of the range. It is oil free, suits all skin types including sensitive, and works with liquid, cream, stick and powder foundations. Chamomile and Yarrow help calm reactive skin, while Vitamin E helps skin hold onto moisture. If you are new to primers, it is the safest place to start, and there is a travel size if you would like to try it first.
Choose Cool Canvas Primer if:
Your answer is about your skin's condition, meaning it runs hot, feels dry, flushes or shows fine lines.
Side by side:
- Skin type - Pre-Foundation suits every skin type. Cool Canvas is best for drier, mature or warm skin.
- Feel - Pre-Foundation is smooth and silky. Cool Canvas is instantly cooling.
- Fine lines - Pre-Foundation smooths the surface. Cool Canvas fills into lines for a soft-focus finish.
- Longevity - Pre-Foundation is the specialist for extending wear.
- Season - Cool Canvas comes into its own in summer. Pre-Foundation is your all-year primer.

For Redness, Dullness Or Warmth
These three Auto Pilot primers change how your skin looks rather than how it behaves.
Auto Pilot Calming Skin Primer:
The one most often confused with Cool Canvas. Calming colour-corrects the look of redness with a pearl-green tint. Cool Canvas calms the feeling of heat. One changes the colour, the other changes the condition, so they work well together.
Auto Pilot Radiance-Boosting Primer:
Adds instant radiance to skin that looks dull or tired. Apply it to the high points of the face for a lit-from-within finish under your base.
Auto Pilot Bronzing Skin Primer:
Gives sun-kissed warmth as it primes. Wear it all over under foundation, or mix a little into your base for a softer glow.
Layering Cool Canvas With Another Primer
Layering primers works beautifully if you follow three simple rules.
1. Condition first, finish second. Cool Canvas goes on first, straight after skincare and sunscreen. Grip, glow or colour correction goes over the top.
2. Use half of each. Two full layers of primer feels heavy and can make foundation slide.
3. Let each layer settle. Wait 30 to 60 seconds between products. Applying over a layer that is still wet is the most common cause of pilling.
A few combinations we love:
- Combination skin - Cool Canvas all over, then Pre-Foundation through the T-zone.
- Hot and red skin - Cool Canvas all over, then Calming pressed onto the cheeks and around the nose.
- Hot day, still want glow - Cool Canvas, then Radiance-Boosting on the cheekbones.
How To Apply Cool Canvas Primer
1. Cleanse, moisturise and apply sunscreen as normal. Let everything absorb for a minute.
2. Take a pea-sized amount of Cool Canvas Primer and warm it between your fingertips.
3. Press it into the skin, focusing on the T-zone, around the nose and anywhere fine lines show.
4. Give it a moment to settle, then apply your foundation.
MUA pro tip: Press, do not rub. Pressing primer into the skin keeps the soft-focus veil intact and helps prevent pilling. For extra blurring, add a second fine layer to the T-zone and cheeks only, a technique we call multi-priming. Cool Canvas also works beautifully on its own for no-makeup days, leaving skin fresh, cool and softly blurred.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which Auto Pilot primer is best for me?
If you want your foundation to last longer on any skin type, choose Pre-Foundation Skin Primer. If your skin runs warm, flushes, feels dry or shows fine lines, choose Cool Canvas. For redness choose Calming, for dullness Radiance-Boosting, and for warmth Bronzing.
Is Cool Canvas Primer replacing Auto Pilot Pre-Foundation Skin Primer?
No. Pre-Foundation remains our all-rounder for every skin type. Cool Canvas is a different primer, made for skin that runs warm, feels dry or shows fine lines.
What is the difference between Cool Canvas and Calming Skin Primer?
Calming Skin Primer colour-corrects the look of redness with a pearl-green tint. Cool Canvas calms the feeling of heat with an instant cooling sensation. One changes the colour, the other changes the condition, so they can be worn together.
Is Cool Canvas Primer good for mature skin?
Yes. It fills into fine lines rather than bridging over them, leaving a soft-focus finish, which makes it our pick for mature and drier skin.
Can I use Cool Canvas Primer if I have oily skin?
Yes, and it is especially helpful in summer when heat makes oiliness worse. If you want one primer for oily skin all year, oil-free Auto Pilot Pre-Foundation is the safer pick, or wear Pre-Foundation through your T-zone and Cool Canvas everywhere else.
Can I layer two primers?
Yes. Apply Cool Canvas first, then your grip, glow or colour-correcting primer on top. Use half the usual amount of each and wait 30 to 60 seconds between layers to avoid pilling.
Does Cool Canvas Primer contain silicone or fragrance?
No. It is silicone free and fragrance free, as well as vegan, gluten free and paraben free.
Can I wear Cool Canvas Primer without foundation?
Yes. On its own it blurs and evens out the skin with a fresh, cooling finish, which makes it ideal for no-makeup days.
Does primer go on before or after sunscreen?
After. Sunscreen is your last skincare step and primer is your first makeup step. Let your SPF absorb fully before you prime to avoid pilling.
I have never used a primer. Where should I start?
Auto Pilot Pre-Foundation Skin Primer. It suits all skin types including sensitive, works with every foundation formula, and comes in a travel size if you would like to try it first.
