Nude & Natural: Find the Perfect Nude Lipstick for Your Undertone

Article image 1

Every makeup bag in the country has at least one of them. The nude lipstick that looked perfect on the model, perfect under the shop lights, and somehow turned into “I look unwell” the second you got home.

You're not alone. The “wrong nude” is one of the most universal beauty experiences there is. And it's not because you have bad taste, or the shade was bad, or the lighting was tricky. It's
because “nude” isn't one shade — it's a category of shades, and the one that works for you is determined by two specific things: your undertone,
and your natural lip colour.

Get those two right and your nude will look like the slept-eight-hours, drank-enough-water version of you. Get either wrong and it'll look like you borrowed a lipstick from a stranger.

Here's how to nail it.

STEP ONE: FIND YOUR UNDERTONE (COOL, WARM, OR NEUTRAL)

Your undertone is the underlying hue beneath the surface of your skin — and it doesn't change with a tan, the seasons, or the weather. It's also the single most useful thing to know about your skin if you wear any kind of makeup.

There are three undertone categories:

•        Cool undertones sit on the pink, rosy, or blue end of the spectrum

•        Warm undertones sit on the yellow, peachy, or golden end

•        Neutral undertones sit somewhere in the middle, with elements of both

Three quick tests will tell you which you are. Do all three — if two agree, that's your answer.

The vein test. Look at the underside of your wrist in natural light. Veins that look blue or purple = cool undertone. Veins that look green = warm undertone. A mix or hard-to-tell = neutral.

The jewellery test. Hold a piece of silver jewellery near your face, then a piece of gold. If silver is more flattering and brightens your skin, you're cool. If gold is more flattering, you're warm. If both look great, you're neutral.

The white vs cream test. Hold a pure white piece of paper or fabric to your face, then a cream or ivory one. Pure white more flattering = cool. Cream more flattering = warm. Both fine = neutral.

A bonus indicator: how your skin reacts to the sun. Burns easily and rarely tans? Usually cool. Tans easily, rarely burns? Usually warm. (Neither rule is absolute — but the pattern holds for most people.)

Got it? Move on.

STEP TWO: MATCH YOUR NUDE TO YOUR UNDERTONE

This is the rule that does most of the work.

If you're cool-toned, look for nudes with pink, rose, mauve or berry-leaning undertones. Avoid anything orange, peachy, caramel, or yellow-based — those will fight your natural skin and read as muddy. Your nude should look like a slightly more done version of your bare lip — gently rosy, never rusty.

If you're warm-toned, look for nudes with peachy, caramel, terracotta, golden brown or warm rose undertones. Avoid pink-based or “cool nude” shades — they'll read as ashy or grey on warm skin and create that “concealer-mouth” effect that's the calling card of a wrong nude. Think soft, sun-kissed, lived-in.

If you're neutral-toned, congratulations — you have the easiest job. The most universally flattering territory is rose-beige, soft pink-brown, or what makeup artists sometimes call “your-lips-but-better” nude. You can lean either warm or cool depending on what you're wearing that day, but rose-beige is the safest default.

STEP THREE: MATCH YOUR NUDE TO YOUR NATURAL LIP COLOUR

Here's the half of the equation most people skip — and it's the difference between a good nude and a perfect one.

A perfect nude should sit within one or two shades of your natural lip colour. Not radically lighter. Not radically darker. The whole point is enhancement, not transformation.

Going too light is the more common mistake — it gives you that washed-out, “concealer-mouth” effect where your lips look greyer than the rest of your face. If your natural lip colour is on the deeper or rosier side, a pale nude will fight you, not flatter you.

Going too dark has the opposite problem - you've crossed out of nude territory into “wearable berry” or “dusty rose”, which is a different category of shade entirely. (Lovely shades, just not nudes.)

The simplest test: hold the bullet up next to your bare lip. If the colour looks like a slightly more polished, slightly more even version of your lip - that's your nude. If it looks like a different lip belonging to someone else - keep looking.

WHERE TO START IN THE COLOUR CULT CRÈME RANGE

The Mattetastic family within Colour Cult Crème is where most nude-lovers will find their match. These are the everyday-wearable shades - the ones designed to flatter across skin tones, sit comfortably on the lips, and read as you, but polished.

A starting framework:

•        For cool undertones: [recommend rose / pink-based Mattetastic shade]

•        For warm undertones: [recommend warm caramel / peachy Mattetastic shade]

•        For neutral undertones: Mattetastic Grace (218) — the most-requested shade in the entire NPC archive, and a true rose-beige that flatters almost anyone

The full Colour Cult Crème lineup is enriched with Vitamin E, Hyaluronic Acid and Tsubaki Oil — so the colour that's sitting on your lips all day is also looking after them. (For the full lineup of cult-classic shades and their heritage names, see our Cult Classics, Reborn guide.)

THE SHADE MAP: ALL OUR CULT CLASSICS

Here's how the lineup breaks down. If you have a favourite from the old range, you'll find it here under its new number.

The Dévine Goddess Set

The expressive end of the lineup. Devine Goddess shades have always been about showing up - pigment-rich, occasion-ready, a little more dramatic than the everyday. The shades in this group lean into mood: a Devine Goddess lip is the one you reach
for when the day calls for a moment.

•        203 — Dévine Goddess SMP [soft muted pink]

•        208 — Dévine Goddess Electra [neutral cool pink]

•        209 — Dévine Goddess Hera [warm rose pink]

•        212 — Dévine Goddess Olympia [berry pink]

•        222 — Dévine Goddess Harmonia [bright warm rose]

•        223 — Dévine Goddess Calypso [bold fuchsia pink]

The Mattetastic Set

The everyday workhorses. Mattetastic shades earned their cult following the way the best lipsticks always do — by being the one you reach for without thinking.

These are the wearable, flattering, “looks-good-with-anything” shades. If you only own one Colour Cult Crème, it's likely from this set.

•        218 — Mattetastic Grace [mauve pink] — the most-requested shade in the entire NPC archive

•        219 — Mattetastic Sophia [warm muted terracotta rose]

•        220 — Mattetastic Lauren [warm muted terracotta]

•        221 — Mattetastic Ava [rosy pink]

The Soul-Matte Set

The deeper, more grown-up end of the matte lineup. Soul-Matte shades brought richness and dimension without crossing into “trying too hard” territory - perfect for evenings, autumn light, or anyone who likes their lipstick with a bit of soul.

•        205 — Soul-Matte 101 [muted warm rose]

THE BOTTOM LINE

The perfect nude isn't a single colour - it's the colour that's right for your undertone, your natural lips, and your day-to-day. Once you know your undertone and stay close to your natural lip depth, finding your nude becomes the easy part.

And once you find it? You'll wear it forever. That's how cult shades are made.

Frequently Asked Questions

Whether you're a full-glam queen or a no-makeup-makeup babe, our lipstick FAQ spills all the deets.

What is a good lipstick that stays on all day?

For long-lasting wear, look for formulas that combine high-pigment payoff with fade-resistant performance. Both our Colour Cult Creme Lipstick and Soul-Matte Longwear Lipstick are long-lasting and designed to stay on all day without cracking or constant reapplication.

Which is better, matte or creamy lipstick?

It depends on the finish you’re after. Matte lipsticks offer a shine-free finish and strong staying power, ideal for bold, defined colour. Creamy lipsticks typically provide a softer finish with added hydration for a more dewy, luminous look and are often chosen for daytime wear.

Are Napoleon Perdis lipsticks cruelty-free?

Yes, all Napoleon Perdis products, including our lipsticks, are cruelty-free.

Which lipstick shade suits my skin tone?

Choosing a shade that complements your skin tone can enhance your natural features: Fair skin: tends to suit soft pinks, peachy nudes, and classic reds. Medium or olive skin tones: pair well with rosy tones, warm corals and brick reds. Deep skin tones: tend to suit rich berries, bold reds, deep plums or chocolatey brown lipstick.
