Frequently Asked Questions

Whether you're a full-glam queen or a no-makeup-makeup babe, our makeup brush care FAQ spills all the deets.

How often should I clean my makeup brushes?

Brushes used with liquids or cream products, like foundation, concealer or cream blush, should be cleaned after every use or at least once per week. These types of formulas tend to build up quickly and can harbour bacteria. Powder brushes can be cleaned less frequently, around every 1-2 weeks, depending on use. For makeup artists, a quick-dry cleanser should be used between every client.

What’s the best way to clean brushes without damaging them?

To clean your makeup brushes without damaging them, use a gentle makeup brush cleaner, mild soap or a specially formulated makeup cleanser. For deep cleaning: 1. Wet the bristles and apply a small amount of cleanser. 2. Gently swirl the brush on your palm or the cleaning pad. 3. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. 4. Reshape the bristles and let the brush dry completely.

Do I need different cleaners for different types of brushes?

Not necessarily, but the right makeup brush cleaner can enhance the cleaning results. Quick-dry brush cleaners are great for spot cleaning for all brush types, especially synthetic ones. Solid brush soaps work well on both natural and synthetic bristles, too, but cleansers made with conditioning ingredients like the coconut oil in our Pro Cleanse Solid Brush Soap are particularly good for preserving the softness of natural bristles.

Can brush cleaners remove long-wear and cream product residue?

Yes, but make sure you choose the right formula. Long-wear and cream products can cling to brush fibres more stubbornly than powders, so a standard soap and water wash might not cut it. High-performance makeup brush cleaners like our Instant Clean Brush Cleaner are designed to break down tough residue quickly and effectively.
